Pioneer men's tennis team falls to Coe in match of regionally-ranked teams

Box Score

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's tennis team lost a 9-0 decision to Coe College in a battle of regionally-ranked teams Sunday.

The ninth-ranked Kohawks remained perfect with the victory, moving to 21-0. Grinnell, ranked 14th, is now 18-9.

Coe swept all six singles matches except at No. 6, where Charlie Wilhelm '15 gave a good battle to his opponent before losing 6-3, 2-6, 10-2. At No. 2 doubles, Colin Johnson '13 and Tracy Johnson '16 just missed victory, falling 9-8.

"Despite the decisive loss on the scoreboard, our match scores against the No. 9 team
in the region shows we are competitive at a good level," said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. "We have work to do in the next three weeks and matches like today's against Coe highlight some areas for us to focus on. Our challenge will be to continue developing  because I still think our team has not shown its best tennis yet."

The Pioneers host Carleton College this coming Saturday at 10th Avenue Courts. Match time is 1p.m.
