Pioneer men's basketball team knocks off Monmouth

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team posted a 121-115 victory at Monmouth College in Midwest Conference action Tuesday.

Aaron Levin '14 and Jack Taylor '15 both scored 27 points for the Pioneers, who are 8-4 in the MWC and 13-4 overall. Levin was 7-of-11 from 3-point land and Taylor 4-of-6.

Patrick Maher '14 added 18 points, while Luke Yeager '15 and Cody Olson '14 had 10 each. Maher also had eight assists, while Tague Zachary '15 added three steals and three blocks. Levin grabbed seven rebounds.

Cole Jackson had a game-high 28 points for the Fighting Scots, who fell to 4-8 in the MWC and 5-12 overall.

Grinnell led by just two halfway through the opening half when Kyle Parker '17 drained a 3-pointer and Olson another to push the visitors ahead 32-24. Grinnell went ahead by as many as 15 in the half before settling for a 67-58 edge heading into the locker room.

But Monmouth rallied, taking a few leads midway through the second half. The last was 88-87 with 9:23 left. However, Dylan Bartuch '15 made two free throws as did Zachary to put the visitors on top 91-88 with 9:08 remaining.

After Monmouth cut the gap to two, Maher made a jumper and three free throws to make it a seven-point lead with 8:51 left. The hosts never got closer than four after that.

Grinnell plays at Lake Forest College Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
