Maher shatters NCAA record with 37 assists in win over College of Faith

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's Patrick Maher '14 shattered the NCAA record, regardless of level, for assists in a game with 37 as the Pioneers rolled past College of Faith (Ark.) 164-144 Monday night at Darby Gymnasium.

Maher, who had 17 assists at intermission, broke the previous record of 34 set by former Pioneer and current associate head coach David N. Arseneault '09 in 2007. Maher had a double-double in the game as he scored 19 points while coming up with three steals.

Aaron Levin '14 erupted for a career-high 51 points for the Pioneers, who improved to 8-2 on the season. He hit 19-of-32 field goal tries, including an 11-of-20 performance from 3-point land, and finished with a double-double as he also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Luke Yeager '15 added 37 points with the help of seven 3-pointers, while Julian Marx '17 drained six treys while scoring 22 points.

Cody Olson '14 had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals, while Tague Zachary '15 also had 10 boards.

"This is something we've been discussing since the beginning of the season," said Maher of the national record. "I wasn't quite sure it was possible, but it was definitely something I wanted to go after.

"It was a total team effort," he added. "Aaron Levin, Luke Yeager and Cody Olson had phenomenal games. But above that, everyone played well. The spacing, timing and moving without the ball from the rest of my team was absolutely perfect and was the reason I was able to reach this goal."

Mike Campbell had a double-double for the Warriors, who are 4-6, with 48 points and 17 rebounds.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt. College of Faith scored the first basket, but then Maher drained a trey and hit two free throws, and Yeager and Levin each scored to make it 9-2 with 18:37 left in the first half.

Grinnell continued to cruise, taking an 86-52 lead into the locker room.

College of Faith got within 12 points twice in the second half, the final time at 138-126 with 4:49 to go. But Grinnell held off the visitors and Maher tied the NCAA assists mark when he dished out his 34th on Olson's layup with 2:09 to go.

He broke the record with 1:51 left in the game when he assisted Yeager's 3-pointer. His 36th and 37th assists came on a 3-pointer by Olson with 1:13 to go and a trey by Marx with 33 ticks left on the clock.

The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Wednesday to face Knox College in Midwest Conference action. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
