Box Score APPLETON, Wis. – The Grinnell College football team collected its first victory of the season - and a school record – in a 29-7 victory over Lawrence University Saturday afternoon.
David Ternes '15 recorded 4.5 sacks, breaking the previous school mark of 4.0 set by Matt Amendt in 1999.
Sam Poulos '17 threw for 240 yards, completing 21-of-38 passes, while
Jacob Bernholtz '17 ran for 102 yards.
Jacob Bernholtz '17 had seven catches for 53 yards and
Jacob Meixler '15 had six catches for 78 yards.
Defensively, Ternes had 15 tackles and
Daniel Munger '16 eight.
Grinnell got out to a great start, erupting to a 19-0 halftime lead. In the first quarter, Poulos hit Meixler on a 16-yard scoring pass with 4:51 left. The 10-play drive also included a 10-yard pass to Meixler, and
Graham Fisher's '16 extra point made it 7-0.
Shortly after that, Ternes sacked Lawrence's quarterback in the end zone to make it 9-0 with :45 left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, with 9:29 to go, Fisher upped the lead with a 36-yard field goal on a drive that included a 33-yard run by Bernholtz. Later in the period, Bernholtz capped an 11-play, 87-yard drive with a 1-yard TD burst with 2:20 left. Fisher's kick made it 19-0.
Fisher booted a 27-yard field goal with 6:51 left in the third period to up the lead to 22-0, and Meixler caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Poulos at the 5:01 mark.
On Lawrence's next series,
Daniel Ryerson '15 recorded a sack and caused a fumble, recovering it as well. Four plays later, Poulos found Meixler on a 20-yard scoring toss. Fisher's extra point made it 29-0.
Lawrence scored later in the period to account for the final margin.
Grinnell returns home this coming Saturday to host Cornell College. Game time is 1 p.m. at Rosenbloom Field.
