Simpson rallies from 23-point 2nd-half deficit to edge Pioneers

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team saw a 23-point second-half lead disappear as the Simpson College Storm rallied for a 104-101 victory Saturday afternoon at  Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who shot just 37.5 percent from the field including 28.3 percent in the second half, fell to 4-6 on the season. Simpson moved to 4-5.

Jack Taylor '15 poured in a game-high 43 points for Grinnell, while Luke Yeager '15 added 24 to go along with three steals.

Kyle Parker '17 added seven rebounds and three steals and Braedon Bayer '18 dished out three assists.

After falling behind 4-0, the Pioneers responded with 14 consecutive points. They led 59-43 at the break and pushed their lead to 23 when Ikaika Phillip's 3-pointer with 14:57 to play made it a 76-53 lead.

However, Simpson slowly chipped away and gained a 95-94 lead with 2:40 left.

The Pioneers refused to fold, though, as a 3-pointer by Yeager with 2:05 left tied the game at 98-all and a trey by Nathan Balcom '18 with 1:35 remaining put the Pioneers ahead 101-100.

However, Simpson got a basket after that to go up by a point. After two Pioneer misses, the Storm got a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to move ahead by three.

Grinnell had two more shots at a basket in the waning seconds but couldn't convert.

The Pioneers are off until the New Year when they entertain Lawrence University on Jan. 3 at Darby Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
