MOLINE, Ill. – The Grinnell College men's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a pair of dual victories Saturday.
The Pioneers opened the day with a 5-4 victory over Augustana College and then blanked St. Ambrose University 9-0.
The Pioneers got off to a strong start against Augustana by winning two of three doubles matches, with victories by the second unit of
Emilio Gomez '15 and
Tracy Johnson '16 (9-8) and No. 3 squad of
Cole Miller '17 and
C.J. Ray '16 (8-5).
Grinnell's winners in singles were Miller at No. 3 (6-3, 7-5), Johnson at No. 5 (6-3, 6-0) and
Charlie Wilhelm '15 at No. 6 (6-4, 6-4).
Against St. Ambrose,
Rob Storrick '15 and
Bryson Cale '16 blanked their foe 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Elliott Czarnecki '15 and
Tommy Pitcher '17 won 8-4 at No. 1, while
Sam Catanzaro '16 and
Will Hamilton '17 won 8-2 at No. 3.
Storrick,
Caleb Kumar '16 and Hamilton each only lost one game in singles. Storrick and Kumar won 6-0, 6-1 at Nos. 2 and 5, while Hamilton was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Ray won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1, Cale won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 and Catanzaro posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
Grinnell plays Carleton College in Owatonna, Minn., Sunday. Match time is 9:30 a.m.
