Grinnell men's tennis team claims 11th consecutive MWC crown, runs win streak against league foes to 105

MADISON, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's tennis team claimed its 11th consecutive Midwest Conference title Friday afternoon, topping Monmouth College 5-2 in the title match.
 
Wins over Monmouth, as well as Lake Forest College in the semifinals, extended the Pioneers' winning streak against MWC teams to 105 matches, dating back to 2002.
 
The Pioneers, who improved to 31-5 on the season, got singles wins from Emilio Gomez '15 at the second spot (6-3, 6-2), Tommy Pitcher '17 at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), Tracy Johnson '16 at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2) and C.J. Ray '16 at No. 6 (6-4, 6-0).
 
Grinnell also won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles with Ray and Cole Miller '17.
 
Earlier in the day, Grinnell defeated Lake Forest 5-0. The Pioneers swept doubles with the teams of Elliott Czarnecki '15-Pitcher (8-0), Johnson-Gomez (8-2) and Ray-Miller (8-6).
 
Grinnell completed the win with Johnson's decision at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1) and a victory by Bryson Cale '16 at No. 6 (6-0, 6-2).
 
The tournament continues with singles and doubles play this weekend.
