Wheaton 5, Grinnell 4WHEATON, Ill. – The Grinnell College men's tennis team split matches Saturday against a pair of regionally-ranked squads.
The Pioneers, ranked 12th in the Central Region, defeated 13th-ranked Elmhurst College 6-3 and lost a narrow 5-4 decision to 14th-rated Wheaton College.
Grinnell swept doubles play against Elmhurst, with wins by the teams of
Elliott Czarnecki '15-
Tommy Pitcher '17 (9-7),
Tracy Johnson '16-
Emilio Gomez '15 (8-6) and
Cole Miller '17-
C.J. Ray '16 (8-3).
Miller won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Johnson earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 and
Charlie Wilhelm '15 posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Against Wheaton, Johnson and Gomez won 8-5 at No. 2 and Miller and Ray teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
Johnson won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Wilhelm posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Grinnell, 28-4 on the season, hosts Monmouth College next Saturday.
