Box Score DECORAH, Iowa – Luther College used a big second quarter to pull away from the Grinnell College football team on its way to a 49-21 non-conference win Saturday afternoon.
The contest was tied 7-all after the first quarter before the Norse erupted for 28 points in the second quarter for a 35-7 lead. Luther tacked on seven more points in the third period for a 42-7 edge.
Luther, 3-0 on the season, ran for 579 yards on the day and did not attempt a pass. Josh Vos led that effort with 219 yards and three touchdowns.
Jacob Bernholtz '17 led the rushing attack for the 0-2 Pioneers with 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Sam Poulos '16 threw for 101 yards and
Zach McGriff '18 had three catches for 36 yards.
Defensively,
David Ternes '15 had 17 tackles, including five solos, and also came up with a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Brogan McWilliams '16 added 12 tackles and
TJ Jones '17 had 10.
Luther scored on its opening drive to make it 7-0. The Pioneers got a score later in the period after
Richard Renteria '15 forced a fumble and recovered it on Luther's 7-yard line.
Three plays later, Bernholtz rumbled in from 4 yards out for the score.
Graham Fisher's '16 extra point made it 7-all with 50 ticks left on the clock.
The Norse responded with their 35-point spurt over the next two periods to all but secure the win.
Grinnell then put together a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Bernholtz had a 13-yard run during the series and Poulos completed passes of 18 and 13 yards to McGriff and
Greg Ruzich '16, respectively.
Bernholtz finished off the drive with a 5-yard TD run and Fisher kicked the point after to make it 42-14 with 12:23 left in the game.
After Luther was forced to punt, Grinnell used a seven-play, 67-yard drive to score. The drive was sparked by a 26-yard run by Bernholtz and 12-yard run by
Carson Dunn '18.
Harrison Hoegh '18, in at quarterback, finished it off with a 15-yard TD toss to
Emmi Sandoval '16. Fisher's extra point made it 42-21 with 7:46 left.
The Norse finished off the scoring later in the period for the 28-point win.
Grinnell plays its first home game of the season next Saturday when Macalester College visits Rosenbloom Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
