GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team shattered a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, topping Beloit College 61-55 at Darby Gymnasium.
Alissa Hirsh '16 had 21 points, seven steals and three assists for the Pioneers, who improved to 5-6 in the Midwest Conference and 7-9 overall.
Anne Boldt '16 added 10 points and
Alex Neckopulos '17 grabbed 19 rebounds.
Beloit dipped to 4-8 in the conference and 5-12 in all games.
The game was tight early before the Pioneers broke things open with a nine-point run. Boldt and
Kaitlyn Norton '17 each hit baskets and
Sophia Gatton '17 added a 3-pointer.
Lydia Stariha '17 and Hirsh followed with layups to make it a 23-15 Pioneer lead with 7:50 left in the first half.
However, Beloit rallied and led 33-32 at intermission.
Grinnell retook the lead and was up by six before going on a key seven-point run as Gatton made a free throw, Norton a basket and Boldt two buckets to push the Pioneers ahead 53-40 with 10:06 left.
The lead was as big as 15 after that before Beloit rallied, coming within four points at the 1:05 mark. Neckopulos sealed the victory with two free throws with :29 remaining.
Grinnell entertains Illinois College Tuesday at Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
