MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team sailed by Mount Mary University 86-48 Tuesday in non-conference action.
Grinnell, 5-6, sported a balanced scoring attack with
Alissa Hirsh '16 leading the way with 18 points.
Sophia Gatton '17 added 12 points,
Lydia Stariha '17 had 11 and
Kayla Morrissey '18 tallied 10.
Alex Neckopulos '17 continued her dominance on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds. Stariha dished out five assists, while Morrissey had three steals.
Grinnell also benefitted from solid free throw shooting, hitting 22-of-25 shots from the charity stripe, and forced 24 turnovers with the aid of 13 steals.
Becky Onan had 19 points for Mount Mary, which fell to 1-10.
Grinnell bolted out to a 47-28 first-half lead. It was just a three-point lead at 18-15 when the Pioneers scored six unaswered points to pull away. Morrissey had two baskets to start the spurt, while
Leah Greenberg '17 sank a pair of free throws to push Grinnell ahead 24-15.
The biggest lead of the half was the 19-point margin at the end when Greenberg hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining. The Pioneers kept it up in the second half to secure the win.
The Pioneers return to Midwest Conference play Saturday when Ripon College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m.
