GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College bolted out to a fast start, but Knox College rallied to post a 90-76 women's basketball victory Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium.
Kayla Morrissey '18 tallied a game-high 27 points for the Pioneers with the aid of 12-of-18 shooting from the field.
Kaitlyn Norton '17 added a big performance with 15 points, while
Sophia Gatton '17 scored 10.
Morrissey also had six assists,
Alex Neckopulos '17 grabbed eight rebounds and
Alissa Hirsh '16 came up with two steals.
Alex Plemmons '15 blocked three shots for the Pioneers.
Hirsh, Morrissey and Gatton opened the game with consecutive baskets to put the Pioneers ahead 6-0. Grinnell later built its lead to eight when Gatton's bucket made it 12-4 with 16:00 left in the first half.
However, Knox raced back and went up by 15 before settling for a 51-39 edge at halftime.
Knox went up by as many as 18 in the second half before the Pioneers gradually scratched their way back. They got as close as eight points twice, the final time at 84-76 on Hirsh's basket with 3:15 left.
However, Knox closed out the game with six consecutive points to secure the win.
Grinnell is now 7-10 in the Midwest Conference and 9-13 overall, while Knox moved to 8-9 in league play and 10-12 in all games.
The Pioneers close out their season Saturday at Illinois College. Game time is 1 p.m.
