Pioneers make amazing comeback before falling in OT

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Despite posting one of the biggest comebacks in program history, the Grinnell College women's basketball team lost an 85-76 overtime decision to Monmouth College Wednesday.
 
Grinnell fell behind by 19 points in the second half before rallying to force the extra period.
 
Alissa Hirsh '16 tallied 25 points for the Pioneers, while Leah Greenberg '17 was red-hot shooting by hitting 6-of-10 shots from 3-point land while scoring a career-high 22 points.
 
Kayla Morrissey '18 added 12 points and Alex Neckopulos '17 got 15 rebounds. Hirsh also had seven assists and three steals.
 
The Pioneers fell behind by 16 points in the first half before rallying to within 35-29 by halftime.
 
In the second half, Monmouth went ahead 53-34 with 12:38 remaining. Grinnell gradually crept back but was still down by eight with 1:20 left. That's when Anne Boldt '16 and Sophia Gatton '17 drained consecutive treys to bring the Pioneers within 63-61 with :44 left.
 
Twice after that Grinnell made it a one-point game, the first at 65-64 on Hirsh's 3-pointer and again at 67-66 on another bucket by Hirsh. She then hit a free throw with :03 left to make it 67-all and force overtime.
 
Grinnell grabbed a two-point lead in the extra period on a basket by Gatton, but Monmouth came back to take the lead en route to victory.
 
Grinnell is now 6-8 in the Midwest Conference and 8-11 overall, while the hosts moved to 7-7 in league play and 8-11 overall.
 
The Pioneers entertain Carroll University Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. The Senior Day contest is slated for 1 p.m.
