LOS ANGELES – The Grinnell College softball team led Augsburg College for most of the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader before falling 7-4.
Melissa Anderson '18 belted a home run, the Pioneers' first round-tripper since the 2013 season, while
Lydia Stariha '17 and
Andi Leff '18 each had a double and single.
Kayla Morrissey '18 also doubled for the Pioneers, who are 0-4 on the season.
Grinnell tallied two runs in the first inning with the aid of Morrissey's sacrifice fly. After Augsburg scored a run in the bottom of the first, Grinnell got two runs in the third on Anderson's two-run blast to center field.
However, Augsburg scored twice in the bottom of the inning, three times in the fifth and once in the sixth.
Anderson and
Maggie Remus '18 shared pitching duties for Grinnell.
In the opener, Augsburg scored once in the first inning and three more times in the second. The Pioneers got two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Remus and run-scoring double by Stariha.
Augsburg added one run in the third and six in the fifth to secure the 11-2 victory.
Again, Anderson and Remus shared pitching duties for Grinnell.
The Pioneers play a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
