DES MOINES, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team lost games Saturday afternoon to AIB College of Business by scores of 13-5 and 8-7.
In the second game, the Pioneers shot out to a 6-0 lead before the hosts came back to win.
Sage Juveland '17,
Kayla Morrissey '18 and
Megan Gibson '17 each had two hits for Grinnell.
In the first inning, Morrissey had a two-run single as did Gibson to push Grinnell ahead 4-0. Juveland had an RBI single in the second inning and
Kristina Weber '16 a run-scoring single in the third to push the Pioneers ahead 6-0.
AIB rallied with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Grinnell got one back in the fourth on Morrissey's RBI. However, the hosts got one run in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the sixth to secure the win.
In the opener, Morrissey had two hits including a double and
Andi Leff '18 also doubled.
Grinnell opened the scoring in the top of the first on Morrissey's RBI double. AIB rallied with a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the third for a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers tied it in the top of the fourth with two RBIs by
Melissa Anderson '18.
AIB went ahead 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth before Grinnell scored twice in the fifth when Juveland knocked in two runs. However, AIB scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame to conclude the game.
AIB improved to 8-18 with the wins, while Grinnell moved to 0-12.
The Pioneers have their first home games next Saturday when Westminster College visits. The first contest of the twin bill is slated for 1 p.m.
