GALESBURG, Ill. – Grinnell College pounded out 14 hits, including a grand slam homer by
Andi Leff '18, en route to a 15-5, five-inning win at Knox College in Midwest Conference action Saturday.
Sage Juveland '17 and
Kristina Weber '16 each had three hits for the Pioneers, while Leff and
Kayla Morrissey '18 added two each. Juveland and Weber had doubles among their totals.
Grinnell scored solo runs in the first and second innings. Juveland had an RBI single in the first and
Megan Gibson '17 a run-scoring single in the second.
Knox scored three runs in the bottom of the first before the Pioneers took the lead for good with seven runs in the third inning. Leff's grand slam, the first homer of her collegiate career, sparked the inning.
The Pioneers scored twice more in the fourth for an 11-3 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Gibson and run-scoring groundout by
Jordan Matosky '16.
After Knox scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers put up four runs in the fifth as Juveland had an RBI double. Morrissey and
Melissa Anderson '17 plated runs with singles and Gibson knocked in another run with a fielder's choice.
Anderson earned the pitching win, scattering nine hits and fanning four batters.
The Pioneers were limited to two hits in the second game, a 2-1 loss. Knox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Pioneers tied it with a run in the fourth on an error. Knox secured the win with a run in the fifth.
Maggie Remus '18 was the pitcher of record for the Pioneers, who are 3-6 in the MWC and 3-22 overall. Knox is 2-9 in the league and 2-23 overall.
Grinnell plays at Illinois College on Sunday. The first pitch of the twin bill is at 1 p.m.
