JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Grinnell College softball team had a huge day Sunday, posting its first doubleheader sweep since 2009 with wins of 5-4 and 6-1 at Illinois College.
In the opener,
Kayla Morrissey '18 had three hits to lead the Pioneers.
The hosts opened a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first two innings before the Pioneers went ahead to stay with four runs in the third on RBI bunts by
Andi Leff '18 and
Sage Juveland '17, an RBI single by Morrissey and run-scoring single by
Maggie Remus '18.
Illinois College closed within 4-3 in the fifth before the Pioneers got a run in the sixth via an error. The hosts scored a run in the bottom of the inning.
Melissa Anderson '18 fanned five batters in earning the win.
In the second game,
Kristina Weber '16 had two hits and
Maggie Remus '18 tossed a five-hitter, fanning three batters.
The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the first on Morrissey's double to left-center. After Illinois College scored in the bottom of the inning, the Pioneers took the lead for good in the fourth when Remus had a sacrifice fly and Weber blasted an RBI double to left.
In the sixth, Weber had an RBI single to left, Juveland hit an RBI single to shortstop and another run scored on an error.
Grinnell, 5-6 in the MWC and 5-22 overall, entertains Iowa Wesleyan on Tuesday.
