LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The weather may be getting cold outside, but the Grinnell College women's basketball team is red-hot.
The Pioneers, who won for the first-ever time at Lake Forest College, ran their winning streak to four games Saturday afternoon with a 60-53 victory in a crucial Midwest Conference contest. The four-game streak is the longest for Grinnell, both overall and in league play, since the 2010-11 season.
Grinnell is now 6-3 in the league and 9-5 overall, while Lake Forest fell to 6-3 in the MWC and 7-6 in all games.
Alissa Hirsh '16 tallied 21 points for the Pioneers and also dished out six assists.
Kayla Morrissey '18 added 12 points, while
Alex Neckopulos '17 added four steals and nine rebounds.
Anne Boldt '16 came up with five steals.
Lake Forest led by five after one quarter before Grinnell rallied for a 36-35 halftime lead on
Leah Greenberg's '17 3-pointer with 4 seconds left.
Grinnell opened the third period with a 12-2 run to break open the game. Boldt, Morrissey and Hirsh had baskets, and Hirsh another for a 44-35 edge. After a basket by Lake Forest, Hirsh poured in two more buckets to put Grinnell up 48-37 with 2:42 left.
Grinnell led 50-39 after three periods and sailed to victory from there.
Grinnell entertains Cornell College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium.
