Pioneers return to winning ways with key MWC win over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – After seeing their four-game winning streak snapped earlier in the week, the Grinnell College women's basketball team got back on track Saturday afternoon with a 65-61 victory over Beloit College in a key Midwest Conference battle.

Alex Neckopulos '17 recorded a double-double for the Pioneers, who have won five of their last six games, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alissa Hirsh '16 led the scoring charge with 19 points and also dished out two assists and had two steals.

Kayla Morrissey '18 added 14 points and two assists for the Pioneers, who are 7-4 in the league and 10-6 overall. Beloit dipped to 3-9 in the MWC and 5-12 in all games.

The Pioneers led 17-14 after one period before Beloit came back to take the lead. The teams were tied at 27-all when the Pioneers closed out the half with a big 7-0 run as Morrissey made two free throws and Anne Boldt '16 another. Boldt added a 3-pointer with :03 left for a 34-27 halftime edge.

Grinnell went up by as many as 11 in the third period before holding a 46-41 lead at its conclusion.

The fourth period was tight the whole way with a few lead changes. But Grinnell put the contest away in the final minute-plus. Leading by one point, Hirsh made a free throw and Neckopulos another for a 62-59 Pioneer lead with :19 left.

Morrissey then got a key rebound and Sophia Gatton '17 was fouled with :15 left and made both shots for a 64-59 lead. Boldt added another charity shot with :06 left to secure the victory.

Grinnell plays at Illinois College on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
