Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell women's soccer team delivers huge performance in key win over Green Knights

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team needed a huge performance to stay in contention for the Midwest Conference Tournament, and the Pioneers promptly delivered Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

Grinnell grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead, and then broke a 1-all tie in the second half with a goal to celebrate a 2-1 victory over St. Norbert College.

The win was Grinnell's first over the Green Knights since 2011 as the Pioneers moved to 3-2-1 in the MWC and 5-6-2 overall. The Pioneers knocked St. Norbert down to 3-2-1 in the league and 7-5-1 in all games.

Carolyn Silverman '17 and Simona Bambi '20 each scored for the Pioneers, while Regan Kasprak '19 was solid at the keeper spot while making nine saves.

Silverman put the Pioneers ahead in the 17th minute. She brought the ball up with two defenders on her. St. Norbert's keeper came out and met them at the top of the box, but Silverman delivered a shot to the left corner of the net for the score. It was Silverman's team-high fifth goal of the season.

St. Norbert tied the contest in the 58th minute, but eight minutes later Bambi went to work as she found herself in the middle of the box and fired a shot in for the goal. It was her second goal of the year.

Grinnell hung on from there to secure the win.

Silverman and Hannah Truesdale '17 each had two of Grinnell's eight shots, while Bambi, Nora Sahel '17, Francesca Varias '18 and Jordan Maddaus '19 had one each.

Grinnell faces Lawrence University at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Springer Field. The contest will be Senior Day for the Pioneers.
