Pioneers get offensive, tally 3rd-most points in program history

GRINNELL, Iowa – After struggling in their season opener, the Grinnell College men's basketball team got offensive Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers erupted for their third-highest point total in program history with a 167-115 victory over Silver Lake College at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell, 1-1 on the season, had four players score in double figures as each had career-highs. Julian Marx '17 scored 35 points with the help of 8-of-18 shooting from 3-point land.

Ky-Sean Johnson '19 and Vinny Curta '19 each had 33 points, with Johnson hitting six treys, and Nick Curta '17 scored 16.

Vinny Curta and Marx had nine and eight assists, respectively. Griffin Boehm '19 had three steals, Reggie Bynum '19 registered two blocks and Jake Conran '20 grabbed six rebounds.

The point total was the most for Grinnell since scoring 173 against Crossroads College in the 2013-14 season.

Silver Lake broke out to a 4-0 lead, but then Grinnell roared back to take the lead for good when Vinny Curta made a layup and Marx a 3-pointer.

It was still an eight-point game at 58-50 when Grinnell broke things open with a 16-7 run. Marx had two 3-pointers during the spurt, Nick Curta added five points, Vinny Curta four and Johnson one.

Grinnell continued to cruise and led 80-61 at intermission. The Pioneers scored the first eight points of the second half and never looked back.

With the loss, Silver Lake fell to 2-9 on the season. Grinnell is back in action again Wednesday with a game at Central College in Pella. The tip is slated for 6 p.m.
