GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball squad got a true team victory Tuesday night.
Eleven Pioneers found the scoring column as they pulled away from North Central (Minn.) for a 73-56 win in Darby Gymnasium.
Kayla Morrissey '18 had 16 points for Grinnell, while
Alex Neckopulos '17 tallied a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Also in double digits was
Kaitlyn Norton '17 with 11 points. Norton was a perfect 2-of-2 from the 3-point line.
Sophia Gatton '17 and Morrissey each posted career-highs in assists with nine and six, respectively. Gatton also had a career- and game-high four steals.
Three Pioneers scored career-highs for points –
Daria Guzzo '19 with seven, along with
Margaret Giles '18 and
Hanna Kessel '18.
Grinnell is 2-1 on the season, while North Central dipped to 0-4.
The Pioneers shot out to a 19-11 lead by the end of the first period and were up 42-34 at halftime.
In the third period, Grinnell put the contest away by outscoring the visitors 18-3. Gatton made one basket and Neckopulos two to start the quarter, making it a 48-34 lead.
After a 3-pointer by the Rams, Norton made a free throw and Neckopulos and Gatton put in baskets for a 55-37 edge.
Grinnell closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer by
Lydia Stariha '17 and baskets by Neckopulos and Guzzo to lead 60-37 heading into the final stanza. The Pioneers maintained from there for the win.
Grinnell heads to Mount Pleasant Saturday to face Iowa Wesleyan University. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
