Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Pioneers off to best MWC start in more than 2 decades while stretching winning streak against Lawrence to 15 games

APPLETON, Wis. – The extension of one long streak led to a feat the Grinnell College women's basketball team hasn't experienced in more than two decades.

The Pioneers coasted past Lawrence University 65-44 Saturday afternoon for their 15th consecutive win over the Vikings dating back to the 2006-07 season.

The victory also pushed the Pioneers to 3-1 in the Midwest Conference, their best league start since the 1992-93 campaign. Grinnell's overall mark of 5-3 is the best for the team since the 2006-07 campaign.

Grinnell's Kayla Morrissey '18 posted her third double-double of the season with game-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field.

Alex Neckopulos '17 added 11 points and Sophia Gatton '18 had nine. Gatton also dished out four assists and Neckopulos came up with two steals.

Lawrence fell to 0-4 in the MWC and 2-4 overall with the loss.

Grinnell grabbed a six-point lead early in the game before the hosts rallied to tie things at 10-all after one period.

After Lawrence went ahead by three early in the second frame, the Pioneers came storming back with a 13-2 run. Morrissey gave Grinnell the lead with two baskets and Ariel Keller '17 added a layup for an 18-15 Pioneer edge with 6:26 remaining.

After Lawrence hit a basket to make it a one-point game, Grinnell scored seven straight points as Keller drained a 3-pointer, Neckopulos made a free throw and Gatton sank a trey to make it a 25-17 game with 3:58 left.

Grinnell continued to hold command and ended the half when Daria Guzzo '19 hit a 3-pointer, the first attempt from beyond the arc in her Pioneer career, to put the halftime score at 30-21.

The Pioneers upped their lead to 50-32 after three quarters and sailed from there for the win.

Grinnell is off until Dec. 29 when it steps out of MWC play to face Buena Vista University.
