Grinnell 7, UW-La Crosse 2MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's tennis team opened up Midwest Conference play Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Cornell College.

Grinnell swept singles play with
Jose Coloma (6-1, 6-3),
Cole Miller (6-3, 6-0),
C.J. Ray (6-1, 6-1),
Bryson Cale (4-6, 6-1, 6-3),
Sam Catanzaro (6-3, 6-3) and
Caleb Kumar (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, Ray and Miller won 8-2 at the second spot and
Will Hamilton teamed with Catanzaro to win 8-2 at No. 3.

Grinnell then stepped out of MWC play to beat Buena Vista University 7-2 to improve to 10-3 overall. Kumar won 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 at the top singles spot. Winning at Nos. 3 through 6 were
Beau Bressler (6-3, 6-2),
Ameer Shujjah (6-1, 6-0),
Peter Sills (6-2, 6-1) and
Lucas LeDoux.

Sills and LeDoux won 8-4 at the second doubles spot, while Bressler and
Zach Lane won at No. 3.

The Pioneers also beat the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 7-2 in a battle of regionally-ranked teams. Grinnell entered the match ranked 18th in the Central Region and UW-La Crosse holds down the 13th spot.
Grinnell won five of six singles matches at the Nos. 1-3 spots as well as 5 and 6 with
Jose Coloma (6-0, 3-6, 6-4),
Cole Miller (6-3, 6-4),
Tracy Johnson (6-4, 6-4),
Tommy Pitcher (6-3, 6-2) and
Sam Catanzaro (6-3, 4-6, 10-4).
Coloma and Catanzaro won 8-4 at the top doubles spot and
Sam Stickels and Pitcher won 8-6 at No. 3.
Grinnell is 11-3 overall.
