ORLANDO, Fla. - In the morning match Grinnell defeated Hope, 9-0, with a somewhat altered lineup.
Jose Coloma and
Tommy Pitcher cruised at No. 1 doubles, 8-1; as did
Sam Stickels and
Tracy Johnson at No. 2, 8-1.
Will Hamilton and
Sam Catanzaro worked past their opponents, 8-4.
In singles, Coloma sailed to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Cole Miller went 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Stickels won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 4
Bryson Cale battled to a 7-5, 5-7, {10-6} victory. Catanzaro won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 while
Zach Lane prevailed, 6-2, 7-6.
Versus College of Wooster, the netmen posted a hard-fought 7-2 win.
Marked by two doubles points coming from Pitcher and Coloma at No. 1, 8-6, and Hamilton and Catanzaro at No. 3, 8-3, the Pioneers took an early lead in the match. Miller and CJ Ray fell, 8-4, at No. 2.
In singles Miller moved up to No. 1 but fell, 6-3, 6-2. Ray came from behind after dropping the first set 2-6 to win the second set 6-4 and the third-set tie-breaker (10-5). Johnson continued his strong campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory and Stickels went 7-5, 7-5 to win. Pitcher and
Caleb Kumar rounded out the team score with victories at No. 5 and 6, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
"We projected this as a very tough day vs. a couple of quality region opponents. I expected us to play better today than on our first day of spring break and that was certainly apparent.
