GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing its third contest in a five-day span, the Grinnell College men's soccer team was plenty sharp as the Pioneers stopped Simpson College 2-1 Wednesday at Springer Field.
The win snapped the Pioneers' four-game winless streak against the Storm, dating back to the 2010 season.
Nick Brule '17 scored both goals for the Pioneers, his fourth and fifth of the season, as the hosts improved to 3-3 on the season.
Major May '17 had another strong effort at keeper and made eight saves in earning the win.
The game was scoreless until the 38th minute when Brule scored. The play began with a high-arching throw-in from the left sideline by
Zach Reeves '20. The throw entered deep into the box where Brule headed the ball into the upper part of the net (scoring play pictured above).
It was 1-all at halftime when Brule gave Grinnell some breathing room with a penalty kick goal in the 52nd minute. A handball by Simpson in the box resulted in the penalty kick, which Brule booted easily past the outstretched hands of the goalie.
Simpson, 3-2-1 on the season, got its lone goal in the 69th minute.
Grinnell managed six shots in the game, with Brule taking three and
Mikoto Kobayashi '20,
Artis Curiskis '18 and
Juan Marin '18 having one each.
Grinnell is back in action Saturday when Nebraska Wesleyan visits Springer Field. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
