GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's soccer team made a valiant comeback Saturday afternoon, only to see Albion College score once more for a 3-2 victory by the visitors at Springer Field.
Albion took a 2-0 lead with goals in the ninth and 39th minutes, but Grinnell responded with a goal just 42 seconds later.
The box was full of players from both teams when
Matt Record '20 passed the ball to
Zach Thal '18, who eventually flipped it to
Kyle Buse '20 who sent it into the net from the right side of the box.
The score stayed 2-1 through halftime before the Pioneers tied it in the 62nd minute on
Nick Brule's '17 goal. After a foul in the box on
Noah Fluharty '19, Brule easily whipped the penalty kick off the hands of the keeper and into the net.
However, Albion scored in the 84th minute to pull out the win and improve to 1-0. Grinnell slipped to 1-1.
Grinnell won the shots battle 10-7, with Brule taking five of those.
Major May '17 worked all 90 minutes in goal and had three saves.
Grinnell has its annual alumni game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
