LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Grinnell College continued its domination of the Lake Forest College women's basketball team Friday and got back onto the winning track in the process.
Grinnell defeated the Foresters 50-46 to conclude a regular-season sweep of the hosts. It marked the Pioneers' fourth win in a row over Lake Forest and the seventh victory in the teams' last nine meetings.
Additionally, Grinnell stepped back into the win column after opening 2017 with three consecutive losses. The victory pushed Grinnell to 4-3 in the Midwest Conference and 6-6 overall, while Lake Forest fell to 2-5 in the league and 3-9 in all games.
Grinnell held the Foresters to 25.8 percent shooting from the field, which tied a season-low for a Pioneer foe. Coincidentally, the other time an opponent shot 25.8 percent was in December's game with Lake Forest. Both times Lake Forest was 16-of-62 from the field.
The Pioneers were sparked by a pair of double-doubles, as
Kayla Morrissey '18 had 15 points and 10 rebounds and
Alex Neckopulos '17 had 10 points and 12 boards. It was the fifth double-double by Morrissey this season and second for Neckopulos.
Neckopulos now has 700 career rebounds and is just 10 away from third place on the Pioneers' all-time career chart.
Lydia Stariha '17 added three assists and
Sophia Gatton '17, Morrissey and
Haley Lopez '17 added two assists each. Gatton also had seven points.
The Pioneers fell behind by three points late in the first period before a trey by
Leah Greenberg '17 tied the game at 11-all.
Grinnell led by two early in the second period before erupting on an 11-point run to go ahead 25-12. Neckopulos and Morrissey each had two baskets during the spurt and Gatton a 3-pointer.
It remained an 11-point game at halftime, with Grinnell leading 30-19. The Pioneers went ahead by as many as 15 in the third quarter before the Foresters rallied within 43-34 by the end of it.
The hosts continued to close and twice came within two points. That's when Grinnell's defense stepped up, forcing two turnovers and a missed shot before Neckopulos scored with 37 seconds left for a 50-46 lead.
The Foresters were forced into two more missed shots down the stretch to preserve Grinnell's victory.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday with a contest at Beloit College. Game time is 1 p.m.
