BELOIT, Wis. – A weekend of perfection was completed Saturday afternoon as the Grinnell College women's basketball team dropped Beloit College 59-43.
The win, which followed up a victory at Lake Forest College Friday, allowed the Pioneers to keep pace in the race for the Midwest Conference Tournament. Grinnell is now 5-3 in the league and 7-6 overall, while Beloit dipped to 0-8 in the MWC and 2-11 in all games.
The Pioneers, who stretched their winning streak against the Buccaneers to five games, had their best shooting performance of the season by hitting 25-of-50 tries for an even 50 percent.
Grinnell's
Kayla Morrissey '18 poured in a game-high 21 points with a near-flawless performance from the field, going 9-for-11. She also led Grinnell with six rebounds.
Alex Neckopulos '17 and
Leah Greenberg '17 each added eight points, which ties a season-high for Greenberg. She hit two of the Pioneers' three treys.
Lydia Stariha '17 added five rebounds and
Kaitlyn Norton '17 tied a season-high with three assists.
Beloit led 17-15 after one period before Grinnell got its first lead at 20-19 on a layup by
Ariel Keller '17 with 8:24 left in the half.
Haley Lopez '17 added two more baskets to push the Pioneers ahead by five, and they maintained that margin for a 30-25 cushion at intermission.
It was still a five-point game when the Pioneers all but put things out of reach with a nine-point run. Neckopulos and Morrissey each made layups, Norton drained a 3-pointer and Morrissey added another basket for a 43-29 lead with 4:11 to go in the third period.
Grinnell built its cushion to 52-33 by the end of three periods and cruised from there for the win.
The Pioneers are on the road again Wednesday with a contest at Monmouth College, the first meeting of the season for the teams. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
