GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's dominance of Lawrence University in women's basketball was extended by yet another game Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers pounced on the Vikings 74-51 to push their winning streak against Lawrence to 16 games, dating back to 2007. Additionally, Grinnell has now won nine games in a row over the Vikings at Darby Gymnasium.
The 23-point margin of victory is the largest of the season for Grinnell, and the margin is the second-highest against the Vikings all-time.
Grinnell limited Lawrence to 25.4 percent shooting from the floor, an opponent season-low.
Grinnell's win also aided its chances of making the Midwest Conference Tournament, as the Pioneers moved to 7-5 in the league and 9-8 overall. Lawrence fell to 0-12 in the MWC and 2-15 in all games.
Kayla Morrissey '18 led Grinnell with 17 points, while
Daria Guzzo '19 poured in a career-high 11. Morrissey also had two steals.
Ariel Keller '17 grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and
Alex Neckopulos '17 tallied eight.
Sophia Gatton '17 had five assists and Keller a career-high four.
Several reserves also had career-high days in terms of
Margaret Giles '18 and
Regan Kasprak '19 for points and
Hanna Kessel '19 in rebounds.
The game was never in question, as the Pioneers shot out to an 11-2 lead. Morrissey began things with a 3-pointer and Neckopulos scored before Lawrence got a bucket.
Morrissey drained another trey, Neckopulos had a layup and Guzzo a free throw for the 11-2 lead. The Pioneers continued the run and were up 16-3 after one period and 39-17 at halftime.
It was a 54-28 game after three periods as the Pioneers cruised to victory.
Grinnell entertains Monmouth College Tuesday at Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
