GRINNELL, Iowa – Entrenched in a key Midwest Conference battle, the Grinnell College men's soccer team continued its winning ways against Cornell College.
The Pioneers improved to 3-1 in the MWC and 5-6-1 overall with a 1-0 blanking of the Rams Wednesday at Springer Field. It moved Grinnell's mark in the past 25 meetings with Cornell to 23-0-2 as the Rams fell to 2-2 in the league and 4-6-1 overall.
Jared Cloutier '20 worked his second shutout at keeper in as many games and was aided by a stringy Pioneer defense that allowed just one shot.
Offensively, Grinnell got all it needed when
Antonio DiMarco '18 converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute. The play was set up when
Noah Fluharty '19 took the ball into the right side of the box, going hard at the defender and then drawing a foul. DiMarco booted the PK into the upper left corner of the net to put Grinnell ahead to stay.
It was DiMarco's MWC-best 10th goal of the season and 70th point of his career, which ties him for sixth on Grinnell's all-time chart with Andrew Stephenson.
The Pioneers managed 11 shots, with DiMarco taking four,
Evan Sorenson '19 and
Carlos Piedrasanta '20 three apiece and
Artis Curiskis '18 one.
Grinnell has another huge MWC contest Saturday when it plays regionally-ranked Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.
