GRINNELL, Iowa – Sporting brand new black uniforms, the Grinnell College men's basketball team made some dents to its all-time leader board.
With
Sean Cullinane '18 going wild from 3-point land, the Pioneers rolled past Lincoln Christian University 153-115 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
Cullinane was deadly from beyond the arc, knocking down 15-of-20 treys while finishing with a career-high 47 points. His 15 3-pointers rank fifth all-time at Grinnell and his 3-point percentage of .750 is sixth.
Cullinane was steady the whole game, hitting 7-of-10 shots from 3-point land in the first half and 8-of-10 in the second.
Additionally, Grinnell's team point total is tied for ninth-best in program history. Also making the top 10 were the Pioneers' totals in assists (sixth with 36), field goals (ninth with 53) and 3-pointers (ninth with 30).
Hannes Kogelnik '21 added a career-best 31 points on 8-of-16 shooting from 3-point land, while
Ky-Sean Johnson '19 scored 19 points and
Vinny Curta '19 put in 18. Curta is just 14 points away from joining the 1,000-point club.
Curta nearly had a double-double with nine assists. Kogelnik added four steals, while
Brad Geiman '21 grabbed seven rebounds and
Griffin Boehm '19 and
Jacob Ekstrand '18 six apiece.
It was a tight game early, with Grinnell leading by just two before opening things up. Cullinane hit a 3-pointer, followed by a basket by the Red Lions. Then, Kogelnik scored on a jumper, Johnson drained a 3-pointer and Boehm made a layup to put Grinnell ahead 40-30 with 8:02 left in the first half.
The Pioneers continued to sail from there, leading 72-50 at halftime while upping their cushion the entire second half to improve to 3-0. Lincoln Christian fell to 1-7.
Grinnell returns to action Tuesday night when Central College of the Iowa Conference visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
