GRINNELL, Iowa – With the aid of a career day by
Vinny Curta '19 and several forced turnovers, the Grinnell College men's basketball team stayed perfect on the year with a 147-106 win over Kansas Christian College Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
Curta tallied 52 points, one better than his previous-best set earlier this year. That figure is 13th-best for a Pioneer in a game and moved his career total to 1,073, which ranks 23rd in school history.
The Pioneers forced 44 turnovers, third-best in a game at Grinnell, and the Pioneers' 63 rebounds rank seventh all-time.
Curta also had four steals, while
Jacob Ekstrand '18,
Hannes Kogelnik '21,
Tyler Grumhaus '21 and
Ikaika Phillip '18 all had three. Grumhaus' total is a career-best, as was his 10 points.
Ky-Sean Johnson '19 added 24 points and Kogelnik had 17. Curta led the team with five assists, while
Griffin Boehm '19 and
Will Dubow '21 had nine rebounds each and
Sean Cullinane '18 six. The totals for Dubow and Cullinane are both career-bests.
Grinnell moved to 5-0 with the win, the team's best start since 2013-14. Kansas Christian fell to 2-5.
The Falcons led twice, the final time at 10-9, when Grinnell went on a 14-0 run to pull away. Johnson and Curta began the spurt with baskets, Curta had two free throws and a layup, and Kogelnik and
Zack Stice '21 each drained 3-pointers to push the Pioneers up 23-10.
It was never close after that as Grinnell built an 83-48 halftime lead and sailed from there.
The Pioneers jump into Midwest Conference play Friday with a game at Beloit College. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
