MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team outscored defending Midwest Conference champ Cornell College in the second half, but a fast start by the Rams paved the way to an 86-59 victory Wednesday night.
Kayla Morrissey '18 tallied 21 points for Grinnell. She was 6-of-10 from the field to boost her career shots made total to 396, ninth-best in program history. Morrissey also had five rebounds and four assists.
Regan Kasprak '19 added a career-high 15 points, while
Tyria Heath '21 had 11 to go along with a career-high four assists.
Hanna Kessel '19 had six rebounds and Heath five. Both also had two steals with Kessel's being a career-high.
Cornell broke out to a 23-7 lead by the end of the first period and was up 45-14 at halftime. Grinnell outscored the hosts 18-14 in the third period, with Kasprak scoring six of those points and Morrissey and Heath tallying five each.
The teams battled to a 27-all tie in the fourth quarter as Grinnell moved to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the league. Cornell upped its mark to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the MWC.
The Pioneers host Lawrence University at 3 p.m. Saturday in Darby Gymnasium.
