CLERMONT, Fla. – After opening the season with three losses, the Grinnell College softball made a major statement on its spring break trip.
The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits, including three each by
Lydia Stariha '17,
Kayla Morrissey '18 and
Ashley Wehrenberg '19, on their way to a 5-2 victory over Oberlin College Monday. The hit total marked a career-high for Wehrenberg. Morrissey and
Melissa Anderson '18 each had triples in the game, while
Mikyla Murphy '19 added a double.
Maggie Remus '18 picked up the pitching win, working 6-1/3 innings and fanning three batters. Anderson got the final two outs for the save.
The Pioneers trailed 2-1 before exploding for four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. With one out, Stariha singled up the middle and Wehrenberg singled to left before Morrissey delivered a two-run triple to left, giving the Pioneers the lead for good.
Murphy gave Grinnell some insurance with an RBI double to left field and Anderson tripled to right to plate another run. Grinnell closed it out from there for the win.
Earlier in the game, Oberlin scored in the top of the first before the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the frame when Stariha singled, was sacrificed to second by Wehrenberg and scored on Morrissey's single up the middle. Oberlin later added a run in the third frame.
Prior to that game, the Pioneers lost a 2-0 decision to St. Olaf College. Anderson had Grinnell's lone hit and was the pitcher of record.
Grinnell meets Carthage at 9 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday.
