Home courts to the liking for Grinnell men's tennis team

Grinnell 8, Cornell 1
Grinnell 6, Hastings 3

GRINNELL, Iowa - After several rugged battles on the road, the home courts of the Charles Benson '39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House were much to the liking of the Grinnell College men's tennis team.

The Pioneers won both contests Saturday, beating Cornell College 8-1 in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams and then stopping Hastings College 6-3.

Ben Cobin '20 was a perfect 4-for-4 for Grinnell, winning both singles and both doubles matches. He won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against Cornell and 6-4, 7-6 against Hastings. He and Will Hamilton '17 won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles against Cornell and 8-3 against Hastings.

Winning three matches each were Hamilton, Jose Coloma '19, Tommy Pitcher '17,  Zach Lane '19 and Sam Stickels '19. Hamilton's other win was a 7-5, 6-4 decision at No. 5 singles against Cornell. Coloma won 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 at the top spot against Cornell and 6-0, 6-2 versus Hastings. He also teamed with Pitcher to win 8-1 at the top doubles position against Cornell.

Pitcher won No. 3 singles matches by scores of 6-1, 6-1 versus Cornell and 6-1, 6-2 against Hastings. Lane and Stickels won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles against Cornell and 8-3 against Hastings. Lane also posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against Cornell, while Stickels won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 singles in the contest with Hastings.
