CHICAGO – Grinnell College's baseball team combined great pitching, timely hitting and errorless defense to knock off the University of Chicago 4-2 on a record-setting day Saturday.
Niko Takayesu '17 tied the Grinnell record for runs in a season with 42 as the Pioneers improved to 18-12. Chicago dipped to 17-11.
Grinnell managed nine hits, including three by
Andrew Shults '19 as well as doubles by Takayesu and
Brad Weaver '19.
Sam LaMotte '20 scattered nine hits over six innings and struck out two to earn the pitching victory, boosting his season record to 4-2.
Ben Binversie worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn his fourth save, which ranks fourth for a season at Grinnell.
Binversie's 16 appearances this season is seventh-most in program history, and Shults' 50 hits are also seventh.
Grinnell did all the scoring it needed in the first two innings, tallying three runs in the first inning and another in the second. In the first, Weaver bashed a two-run double to right field and
Julian Cabrera '19 had an RBI single through the right side.
Shults added an RBI single through the right side in the second for a 4-0 lead. Chicago scored solo runs in the second and fourth innings.
The teams will meet again at noon Sunday.
