MWC South champs complete regular season with Senior Day contests against Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa – Entering the day having secured the Midwest Conference South Division title, the Grinnell College lost a pair of contests to Cornell College at Pioneer Park Sunday.

Cornell used three big innings in the opener to secure an 18-5 win and spot in the MWC Tournament. The Rams finished off the sweep with a 7-3 decision.

The contests also marked the Pioneers' Senior Day, honoring a group that has won more games any in a four-year span in program history. This year's squad, which has won 89 games in since 2014, is 13-7 in the MWC and 20-14 overall. Cornell moved to 12-8 in the MWC and 18-18 in all games.

In the opener, Niko Takayesu '17, Brad Weaver '18, Nathan Zaroban '18 and Ravi Levens '19 all had two hits to spark Grinnell's nine-hit attack. Shane Comiskey '18 suffered the loss for the Pioneers, who committed four errors in the game.

Grinnell scored three of its runs in the second inning after trailing 2-1. Benjamin Wong '18 hit a sacrifice fly to right, Takayesu belted an RBI triple to center and later came across on a passed ball.

Cornell scored again in the third, added five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth for an 11-3 lead. Grinnell scored a run in the sixth on Levens' RBI single to right. However, Cornell tallied two runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to go up 18-4.

Wong completed the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Pioneers got out to a 2-0 lead in the second game, as Andrew Shults '19 hit a sacrifice fly to right in the first and Takayesu plated a run with a groundout in the third.

Cornell scored twice in the fifth and twice more in the sixth to take the lead for good. Ben Spencer '20 belted the first homer of his collegiate career in the seventh, a solo shot over the left-field fence, to complete Grinnell's scoring.

Gabriel Shubert '20 suffered the pitching loss.

During the games, Takayesu extended his program-leading runs total to 47, moved up to second on the season triples chart with five, is fourth in assists with 122 and 10th in double plays completed with 23.

Weaver now has the seventh-most doubles in program history with 12, while Carson Gampell '20 is 10th in putouts with 218.
