Grinnell men's soccer team tunes up for league play with thrilling double-overtime win

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team tuned up for Midwest Conference play in thrilling fashion Sunday afternoon.

Carlos Piedrasanta '20 scored a goal in the sixth minute of the second overtime to deliver the Pioneers a 2-1 victory over Buena Vista University at Springer Field. The victory snapped a six-game winless streak while extending Grinnell's victory streak over Buena Vista to seven games.

The game-winner was Piedrasanta's second goal of the year. The play began with Antonio DiMarco '18 delivering a corner kick from the right side into the box. Piedrasanta got his head on the ball and put it in the left corner of the net, sending the Pioneers into celebration.

The assist was DiMarco's team-high fourth of the year and 19th of his career, putting him alone in second place on Grinnell's all-time chart.

The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead just six minutes in when Jasper Yang '21 scored the first goal of his collegiate career. On the play, Tommy O'Donnell '20 put up a nice shot from just outside the box. The keeper saved the shot, but the ball deflected off his hands. Yang took possession and put the ball in the top right corner of the net.

But Buena Vista added a goal in the 61st minute to force overtime.

Grinnell won the shots battle 18-16, with Yang taking four and Piedrasanta, Zach Reeves '20, Francisco Sanchez-Conde '18, Artis Curiskis '18 and DiMarco taking two each.

Michael Spicer '21 played the entire game at keeper for Grinnell and made seven saves.

Grinnell, 2-5-1 on the season, opens league play Saturday when Beloit College visits Springer Field. Buena Vista fell to 3-5.
