GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's soccer team opened Midwest Conference play on a dominating note Saturday, shutting out Beloit College 3-0 at Springer Field.
The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in the 28th minute when
Evan Sorenson '19 found the back of the net on
Antonio DiMarco's '18 corner kick assist. It was Sorenson's third goal of the season and the team-high fifth assist for DiMarco. It marked DiMarco's 20th career assist.
Grinnell made it a 2-0 halftime lead when
Sidney Hotchkiss '20 scored the first goal of his Pioneer career on an assist by
Carlos Piedrasanta '20, his first of the season. On the play, Piedrasanta dribbled to the center of the box and fired to Hotchkiss, who found the back of the net.
Early in the second half,
Artis Curiskis '18 drove the middle of the box and was fouled. He delivered on the penalty kick for his second goal of the season and 17th of his career.
Pioneer keepers
Jared Cloutier '20 and
Michael Nattinger '18 combined duties for Grinnell, with Cloutier saving two shots and Nattinger one as they pitched the shutout.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 22-5, with Hotchkiss taking four shots, Piedrasanta three and DiMarco, Sorenson and
Juan Marin '18 two each.
Grinnell, 3-5-1, entertains Lake Forest College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Beloit fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.
