Grinnell men's soccer team fall just short in wild contest

GRINNELL, Iowa – In what turned out to be one of the wildest soccer matches of the season, the Grinnell College men's team came up just short Sunday.

The Pioneers broke out to a quick 3-0 lead, and later rallied with a goal to force overtime before Lake Forest eked out a 5-4 double overtime victory at Springer Field.

Grinnell dominated the early portion of the back-and-forth physical contest with three goals in the first 32 minutes. In just the fifth minute, Evan Sorenson '19 recorded his fourth goal of the season on Zach Steinberg's '20 assist.

The Pioneers' next goal was highlighted by the infrequent goal keeper assist in the 28th minute. On the play, Grinnell keeper Jared Cloutier '20 booted the ball downfield, which Antonio DiMarco '18 possessed and then scored in the top left corner of the net for his team-high seventh goal of the season. It also marked DiMarco's 22nd career goal, putting him 10th all-time at Grinnell.

Carlos Piedrasanta '20 got into the scoring act in the 32nd minute when he headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick for his third goal of the year. Kyle Buse '20 was credited with the assist.

However, Lake Forest got goals in the 36th and 42nd minutes to make it a 3-2 game at halftime. The Foresters then scored in the 72nd and 83rd minutes to go up late.

But Jasper Yang '21 wouldn't allow the Pioneers to go away, as he scored just a little more than a minute after Lake Forest's goal. On the play, Yang took a pass in the middle of the box and kicked it into the upper right corner of the net. Buse had the assist on the play.

The teams played one overtime without scoring before Lake Forest ended the contest with a goal in the 104th minute.

Grinnell managed 20 shots in the game, with Piedrasanta taking five and Artis Curiskis '18 four.

Cloutier worked the whole game at keeper and had 10 saves.

Lake Forest improved to 2-0 in the Midwest Conference and 5-3-1 overall with the win. Grinnell is 1-1 in the league and 3-6-1 in all contests.

The Pioneers' next action is a MWC match at Illinois College. Action at Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 3:30 p.m.
