GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team emerged from the opening weekend of Midwest Conference play in perfect fashion – literally.
Grinnell won its second contest in as many days Sunday at Springer Field, rallying past rival Lake Forest College for a 2-1 victory.
The win pushes the Pioneers to 2-0 in the MWC and 4-4 overall, while Lake Forest fell to 1-1 in the league and 3-7 in all games.
Lake Forest got on the board first, but the Pioneers made sure they didn't go into the locker room behind as they scored with less than a minute-and-a-half before intermission.
Alyssa Radakovich '21 scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the right time, with
Kitt Richards '18 getting her first assist of the year. On the play, Richards drove the ball up the middle of the field and passed several defenders before delivering to Radakovich on the right wing. Radakovich responded by putting a nice shot in the top right corner of the net to tie things up.
The score remained 1-1 until the 76th minute when
Gwen Holtzman '19 scored the game-winner, her second goal of the year.
Simona Bambi '20 sent a cross into the box.
LilyRose Weiss '18 kicked a shot toward the goal, which was deflected off the keeper's hands. Holtzman was at the right spot at the right time, gathering control and putting it into the net. It was Weiss' second assist of the year.
Elizabeth Hunt '21 made the most of her first collegiate start at keeper, turning away eight shots while collecting the win.
Grinnell managed 10 shots in the game, with
Valencia Alvarez '20,
Francesca Varias '18 and
Lauren Edwards '20 taking two apiece.
The Pioneers step out of league play Wednesday as they host Buena Vista University. Action at Springer Field begins at 4:30 p.m.
