Pioneer women's soccer team rolls up another victory

GRINNELL, Iowa – The good times keep rolling for the Grinnell College women's soccer team.
 
The Pioneers peppered the net with 43 shots on their way to a 3-1 victory over Buena Vista University Wednesday at Springer Field, stretching their winning streak to three games in the process.
 
The win pushes the Pioneers to 5-4 overall, while Buena Vista fell to 2-7-1.
 
Buena Vista took the lead in the 11th minute, but the Pioneers responded in the 28th minute when Celeste Kaspar '21 scored the first goal of her collegiate career on an assist by Jordan Maddaus '19. On the play, Maddaus delivered a perfect pass to Kaspar from the middle of the box to the left wing. Kaspar put the ball into the left corner of the net to tie things up.
 
The score remained 1-1 through halftime before the Pioneers took the lead for good with a goal in the 47th minute as Simona Bambi '20 connected for the third time this season. Valencia Alvarez '20 played a beautiful cross to Francesca Varias '18 in the middle of the box. Varias saw Bambi squaring up for a shot behind her and passed the ball, allowing Bambi to put a shot in the top right corner of the net. Varias was awarded the assist on the play.
 
Grinnell got some breathing room in the 81st minute when Maddaus scored her third goal of the year on Alvarez's assist. Alvarez crossed it into Maddaus in the middle of the box, and Maddaus put a strong strike into the middle of the net.
 
Maddaus had eight shots for Grinnell, Bambi and Alvarez each took six and Varias recorded five.
 
Elizabeth Hunt '21, seeing her second start at keeper, got the win and made seven saves in the process.
 
The Pioneers return to Midwest Conference play Saturday with a contest at Illinois College. Action in Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 1 p.m.
