Grinnell women's soccer team rolls up 4th win in a row while staying perfect in MWC

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Grinnell College women's soccer squad kept its successful run going Saturday afternoon, rolling over Illinois College 7-3 in Midwest Conference play.
 
The Pioneers' fourth victory in a row helped them stay perfect in MWC play with a 3-0 mark. The goal total for Grinnell, 6-4 overall, is the highest since tallying eight against Rockford University in 2014.
 
Several Pioneers got into the scoring act, including a two-goal performance by Simona Bambi '20 that pushed her season total to a team-high five. Valencia Alvarez '20, Francesca Varias '18, Gwen Holtzman '19 and Jordan Maddaus '19 all had one goal.
 
Alvarez opened the scoring in the second minute when she took a pass from the left wing and found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year. Maddaus and Varias had assists on the play.
 
Bambi added a goal in the 24th minute on Maddaus' assist when she scored on a counter-attack from the left side of the box. In the 28th minute, Maddaus scored her fourth goal of the year on a header, with Alvarez getting the assist.
 
Holtzman got her goal in the 36th minute on Bambi's assist, trickling the ball in after a short corner kick for her third goal of the campaign.
 
Illinois College got a goal in the 40th minute, but the Pioneers scored a few minutes before halftime on an own goal for a 5-2 edge at intermission.
 
The Pioneers got goals in the 60th and 74th minutes in the second half. Varias scored on an assist by Alvarez for her fourth goal of the year, rebounding the ball after an initial save and putting it into the net.
 
Bambi scored on a long shot outside the 18 to secure the win.
 
Grinnell won the shots battle 31-6, with Bambi taking seven, Varias six and Lauren Hurley '18, Alvarez and Maddaus taking four each.
 
Elizabeth Hunt '21 got the win at keeper, pushing her record to 3-0. She had three saves.
 
The Pioneers play at Knox College next Saturday.
