RIPON, Wis. – Grinnell College's men's soccer team used a flurry of goals in the second half to defeat Ripon College for the 13th time in a row Saturday, winning by a 4-1 score.
The Pioneers improved to 3-2 in the key Midwest Conference win and 6-5 overall. Grinnell led 1-0 at halftime when
Ray Goedeker '22 scored his fourth goal of the season in the fifth minute as he headed the ball in on
Noah Fluharty's '19 second assist of the year.
The score was just 1-0 at halftime before the Pioneers erupted for three goals in a 19-minute span.
Caleb Ritter '21 tallied his third goal of the year in the 58th minute on
Mikoto Kobayashi's '20 team-high seventh assist with a shot to the left corner.
Kobayashi's assist total ranks sixth in program history for a season, and the Pioneers' team total of 2018 is third-best in a season.
Zach Steinberg '20 scored the first goal of his career in the 71st minute on
Zac Reeves '20 third assist, heading the ball into the back of the net. Just six minutes later, Kobayashi scored his first goal of the season and second of his career when he sent a ball into the right side of the net.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 20-6 including 15 shots on goal, and had six corners compared to one for Ripon. Kobayashi had four shots for Grinnell and Reeves three.
Jared Cloutier '20 got the win at keeper, making three saves in 69 minutes before being relieved by
Ben Heller '20. Cloutier ranks ninth in program history for career games played at keeper with 33.
With the loss, Ripon fell to 0-4-1 in the MWC and 3-8-1 overall. The Pioneers continue their northern swing Sunday with a MWC test at St. Norbert College. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
