Grinnell women's soccer team leads most of the way before falling to Green Knights

DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's soccer team struck first while building a 1-0 halftime lead over St. Norbert College Sunday afternoon in Midwest Conference play.

But the Green Knights got a pair of goals late in the second half, the latter on a penalty kick, as they eked out a 2-1 win. Grinnell is now 4-2 in the MWC and 6-5-1 overall, while St. Norbert moved to 3-2 in the league and 4-9 in all contests.

Grinnell's Jordan Maddaus '19 delivered her third goal of the weekend and team-high fourth of the season in the 19th minute, scoring after a cross and redirect off the keeper. It was the 12th goal of Maddaus' career. Elyse Salpekar '19 got the assist, her third of the season.

It remained a 1-0 Grinnell lead for a lengthy time before the Green Knights scored in the 78th minute to tie it. Four minutes later, the hosts were awarded a penalty kick and scored.

Grinnell got off six shots in the game, with Simona Bambi '20 taking six, Maddaus three and Salpekar one. Elizabeth Hunt '21 played a solid contest at keeper and made five saves.

The Pioneers step out of league play Wednesday when they travel to Northfield, Minn., to play St. Olaf College.
