GRINNELL, Iowa – Facing a must-win situation, the Grinnell College men's soccer team came through with flying colors Saturday.
Grinnell stayed in the Midwest Conference Tournament hunt with a 1-0 win over Monmouth College at Springer Field, the Pioneers' seventh win in a row over the Fighting Scots. Grinnell is now 4-3 in the MWC and 7-6 overall, while Monmouth fell to 3-4-1 in the MWC and 6-7-1 in all games.
Grinnell's goal was by none other than
Jasper Yang '21, the scoring machine who tallied his team-high 10th goal of the year and 14th of his career in the 50th minute. On the play,
Noah Fluharty '19 received the ball on the right side and sent a beautiful pass to
Ray Goedeker '22 in the middle of the field. Goedeker then one-touch passed it to Yang, who sent the ball into the right side of the net from 6 yards out. It was Goedeker's fourth assist of the year and Fluharty's third.
Jared Cloutier '20 was stellar in goal, recording his second shutout of the year and making five saves.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 24-14, with Yang and Goedeker taking six each,
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 four and
Kyle Buse '20,
Sam Naik '21 and
Zach Steinberg '20 two each.
The Pioneers have 28 assists this season, second-best in program history, and 109 shots on goal which ranks ninth. Yang ranks 10th for career shots on goal with 43 and Cloutier is ninth in saves with 104.
Grinnell has another critical MWC contest Wednesday at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Kickoff is at 3:45 p.m.
