MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - It was an even battle from the get-go, as the Grinnell College men's soccer team battled toe-to-toe with the Cornell College Rams Wednesday afternoon.
But in the end, the Rams eked out a 2-1 Midwest Conference victory to improve to 6-1-1 in the league and 14-1-2 overall. Grinnell is now 4-4 in the MWC and 7-7 in all contests.
The teams were even on the shots chart with 12 apiece, and each goalkeeper made four saves. Cornell jumped on top 1-0 in the 19th minute, but the Pioneers got right back in it when
Evan Sorenson '19 knocked in a header in the 21st minute for his third goal of the year and 12th in his career.
Zac Reeves '20 had the assist, his fourth of the season.
However, the Rams scored again in the half and made it stand up in the final 45 minutes to secure the win.
The Pioneers, who outshot Cornell 7-5 in the second half, got four shots from Sorenson, three by
Noah Fluharty '19 and two from
Mikoto Kobayashi '20.
Jared Cloutier '20 had four saves while playing the entire contest at keeper for Grinnell.
Grinnell closes out the season Saturday with a home date against Illinois College.The Senior Day affair begins at 11 a.m.
