MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Grinnell College women's soccer team has again punched its ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament.
For the third season in a row, and seventh time in the last eight years, the Pioneers earned a spot in the four-team field following Tuesday afternoon's 2-1 win at Cornell College. The victory was Grinnell's sixth in the past seven years against the Rams and 28th in the last 30 meetings.
Grinnell, 6-2 in the MWC and 8-6-1 overall, is making its 24th trip to the MWC Tournament over the past 28 years.
The Pioneers rallied from a 1-0 deficit when
Gwen Holtzman '19 scored her third goal of the season and fourth of her career in the 38th minute.
Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 had the assist, her second of the year.
The score remained 1-all at halftime and well into the second half before
Jordan Maddaus '19 scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 71st minute. It was her team-high sixth goal of the year and eighth in her career.
Valencia Alvarez '20 had the assist, her fourth this year.
Elizabeth Hunt '21 had a strong outing at keeper for Grinnell and made two saves. The Pioneers outshot Cornell 10-5 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Kayim-Yanko had four of those shots and
Elyse Salpekar '19 took three. Holtzman, Maddaus and
Crys Moosman '22 had one shot apiece.
Cornell dipped to 4-4 in the league and 5-11-1 overall with the loss.
Grinnell finishes the regular season Saturday when Illinois College visits Springer Field on Senior Day. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. After that, Grinnell will play the following Friday in the MWC Tournament semifinals at Galesburg, Ill.
