GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College and Knox College always engage in a physical, exciting men's soccer matchup and Saturday afternoon was no different.
Grinnell grabbed a 2-1 lead right before halftime, but the Prairie Fire rallied for a 3-2 Midwest Conference victory at Springer Field. Grinnell is now 2-2 in the league and 5-5 overall, while Knox moved to 3-1 in the MWC and 8-3-1 in all games.
Knox got on the board in the 12th minute, but then it was the Pioneers' turn. In the 38th minute,
Ray Goedeker '22 scored his third goal of the season on
Zac Reeves' '20 second assist. On the play, Reeves kicked a long ball into the box for Goedeker who headed it in for the goal.
Right when it looked as if it would be tied at halftime, the Pioneers struck again as
Caleb Ritter '21 scored his second goal of the year in the 43rd minute.
Jasper Yang '21 headed the ball to
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 on the play, who then delivered it to Ritter for a goal in the bottom right portion of the net. It was Kobayashi's team-high sixth assist and Yang's third.
Knox scored less than two minutes into the second half on an own goal and then secured the victory with a score in the 62nd minute.
Grinnell had 13 shots in the game, with two apiece by
Zach Steinberg '20,
Noah Fluharty '19 and Goedeker.
Jared Cloutier '20 tallied nine saves for the Pioneers as he moved into ninth place all-time at Grinnell for games played at keeper with 32.
Grinnell hits the road next weekend for a pair of contests, starting with an 11 a.m. matchup with Ripon College Saturday.
